Thank you all for coming out Saturday to help with our first Food Sovereignty Action Day at Shavon L. Dean Memorial Garden. 🌻✨
A memorial garden for Shavon L. Dean daughter of Deborah Dean who unfortunately passed away due to gun violence. This garden is in her memory and the memory of other children lost to gun violence. Deborah works nonstop to bring awareness to this issue and to create a space for community members to feel welcome. One of the many gardens without water in Chicago (!) yet she continues to cultivate this space with fierce love and dedication.
If you wish to donate and find out more about her work you can reach out to us and we can connect you.
Some of the tasks we did:
-We built a new raised bed!
-Planted native, drought resistant, sun loving plants
-Harvested cherry tomatoes, kale, Swiss chard, onions
-Planted strawberries seedlings
– Weeded, mowed, watered
-But the most important thing was learning about the importance of the this garden ✨
Thank you Deborah for your continued work and dedication to end gun violence, create safe spaces, and cultivate food sovereignty. Thank you St. Sabina crew slgstsabina for the help as well and the volunteers who showed up !
